Les Hiboux gites are typical Charentaise self catering properties that maintain all the traditional features of rural France while having been renovated to a high standard to include all the mod cons to make the holiday a real pleasure.
Each of these houses has its own terrace, with patio furniture for “al fresco” eating and there is a communal barbecue area. The homes look onto the courtyard, which is at the end of a short driveway and has plenty of parking space.
In the 3 acres of enclosed gardens with picturesque views of the surrounding countryside, the properties share a 5mX10m swimming pool. (Not heated and available in summer only). It has steps leading down into the water and is surrounded by a terraced area which is ideal for sunbathing. For safety, the pool is surrounded by a wall with a lockable self-closing gate.
In the formal area, trees and flowerbeds surround a gated and fenced pond, and there is a boules pitch.
There are a great many activities on site for both children and adults. A games room is available just off the courtyard, with table tennis, table football, a pool table and outdoor sports equipment. Bicycles for all ages are available. There are two fields, the first of which has a children’s area with swings, a slide, children’s cabin, football goal posts and a large sunken trampoline. The lower field is left as a wildlife habitat.
Deep in the French countryside, this is truly a holiday haven.

Summary: We have just come back from a lovely relaxed week at Les Hiboux, which isnt always easy with a 4 and a 2 year old but somehow it was! A big part of it was the gardens which are safe, well maintained and spacious. Our children loved the treehouse and the big highlight was the sunken trampoline. They also made lots of friends and were quite sad to leave each other at the end of the week! Ellen and Tim made us feel very welcome and were helpful throughout the holiday. The accommodation was spacious, clean and had everything we wanted. Would definitely recommend.

Summary: A very relaxed holiday, as the children were very well occupied with all the facilities at Les Hiboux. Sunken trampoline, football pitch with posts, 2 games rooms and the swimming pool. We stayed in La Grange which had 6 bedrooms and 3 shower rooms. The gite was spacious and well laid out, with washing machine and dishwasher. Everything was lovely and clean and the beds made on our arrival. We made full use of the terrace with benches for meals outside, under the shade of the pergola. Chef Boutonne is only 10mins away and had all we needed. We had a few outings to a lovely river at Ruffec and to Zoodysee 1/2hr away recommended by Ellen & Tim, the helpful owners. We also made full use of the bikes in assorted sizes for exploring the rural location. It really was a relaxing holiday for us all.

Summary: My husband and I are active people with busy lives. We have just had the perfect break at this glorious location. We arrived tired and ready for a rest. We could relax by the pool or in the wonderful gardens. Once we were ready for action again we were able to cycle around the local countryside and beautiful villages on cycles provided and dream about which house we would buy when we move to France. We travelled to Ile d' Oleron, about an hour and half drive, and spent a lovely day on the beach and kayaking in the sea. There are plenty of other waterways nearer Ouismes and spent another day kayaking in Coulon. We played boule, table tennis and table football. Our holiday was a joy. There was peace and quiet when we needed it and plenty to do when we felt like it. Can't wait for next year.

Summary: We have just returned from a delightful week at Les Hiboux gites. Countryside i location but there was still loads to do for the children. Games rooms, bikes of all sizes including a trailer, to use out on the quiet country roads, football posts and a trampoline which is safely sunken into the ground. The holiday cottage we stayed in was well kitted out and very easy for a self-catering holiday. Dishwasher and washing machine made it like home from home. Tim and Ellen were very helpful in their suggestions for nearby places to visit, such as Futuroscope, local markets and the chap with the wine in Chef Boutonne. The weather was great and we hope to return when the pool has warmed up! Thoroughly recommended.

Summary: We stayed in this lovely clean self catering gite as a family group with our children and grandchildren. There was plenty of space in the house and the 3 shower rooms were more than adequate. The kitchen had everything including dishwasher and washing machine. The garden was great with swings and a very sensibly sunk trampoline which meant that the smaller grandchildren could happily bounce, very safely. The pool was a little chilly at that time of year but we made full use of the games rooms. The owners, were very helpful with their suggestions for day trips and shorter outings. A great market at Lezay gave us lots of ideas for the bbq. We also took a trip to the beautiful Ile de Re for lunch at the port of St Martin, followed by a spot of sandcastle building. Les Hiboux gites are excellent for a family holiday at a lovely peaceful countryside location. We would definitely recommend them.

Summary: My family was looking for a peaceful break away from it all, for the Easter weekend. We picked Les Hiboux because of the ideal location and excellent reviews. We were not disappointed. The accomodation was first rate, very clean and spacious. The owners Tim and Ellen were on hand on arrival, and nothing was too much trouble for them. They looked after us from start to finish. The kids had plenty of space in the beautiful gardens, and although it was a little chilly to use the swimming pool, there was plenty of other things to keep them busy. The games room was a particular favourite. When we did venture out, we drove the short drive to La Rochelle, a lovely seaside town. Nearby, the town of Chef Boutonne had all the shops we needed, so convenient.I would have no hesitation in recommending Les Hiboux to anyone, will be bringing the family back for another visit soon !

Summary: A wonderful time with the family! We were warmly greeted on arrival and the house was spotless and homely. There was so much to do locally and the owners provided enough within the grounds to keep us entertained if we decided not to explore. Absolutely faultless, we will be returning but next time for longer!
